DERİNKUYU UNDERGROUND CITY
Derinkuyu is situated 29 km from Nevşehir on the road to Niğde. The city is approximately 85m deep. It contains all of the usual rooms of an underground city (stables, cellars, storage rooms, refectories, churches, wineries gets. ) In addition, a large room with a barrel-vaulted ceiling on the second floor served as a missionary school, the rooms to the left used for studying. From the third and fourth floors down, vertical staircases eventually lead to a cruciform church on the lowest floor. The 55m-deep ventilation shaft was also used as a well. Not every floor has access to a well. Some of the wells were not connected with the surface to prevent the enemy from poisoning them. Derinkuyu Underground City opened to visitors in 1965, but only 10 percent of the excavation can be visited.
